NASA Glenn Visit

ECO PHYSICS recently visited the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Glenn is NASA’s only research center in the Midwest, officially named after John Glenn in March 1999. This site was established in 1941 and was incorporated into NASA in 1958. It is NASA’s third oldest research center. The purpose of the facility has evolved over the years, it was originally for aircraft propulsion studies and now it creates advanced technology for aviation and space exploration.

Their facilities currently include wind tunnels, drop towers, vacuum chambers, and a research aircraft hangar. We were fortunate enough to see some of these and take some photos during our installation and training visit. Glenn is involved with many important projects, such as the International Space Station and the Artemis Program, which is NASA’s latest plan to return to the Moon.

We hope to be involved in more of the great work and research that NASA Glenn will do in the future. Thank you to Krystal and Dawn for their time.

Fall seemed to turn to winter quickly for us this year!

Although we still have about one more week of Fall, winter seems to be already upon us.
But before we celebrate winter, here is one last look at autumn, one of my favorite seasons. We were really busy here at ECO PHYSICS, and we are closing in on a record year for us! We attended the international ECO PHYSICS Distributors meeting in Heidiland, Switzerland back in late October and enjoyed some great Swiss hiking and of course, food and beverages.

I hope all of you had a great Fall season, and now it is on to the end of the calendar year, Holidays and a chance soon to recharge the batteries once again so that we are ready for the new year!

Researchers chose nCLD 855Y due to unique application requirements for flow, pressure, humidity and response time

The nitrogen oxides (NOx) generated by lightning can increase the amount of HOx (HOx = OH + HO2) present in the atmosphere, but direct HOx production from lightning has never been quantitatively investigated in the laboratory.

In a laboratory study, researchers Jenkins, J. M., Brune, W. H., & Miller, D., generate prodigious amounts of HOx by both visible and subvisible electrical discharges over ranges of pressure and water vapor mixing ratios relevant to the troposphere. Also measured were NO, total nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone (O3), and OH exposure, which is the integral of the hydroxyl radical concentration over time since the discharge.

Because of the challenging application requirements across different flow/pressures and fast response time of <1 second researchers decided to use ECO PHYSICS nCLD 855Y for NO and NOx measurements.

Hydrolysis of NO2 on indoor surfaces is a major source of HONO

NO2 was measured by ECO PHYSICS CLD 88p + PLC 860 photolytic (metal halide lamp) converter.

Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important gaseous pollutant that causes adverse health effects and is the main source of hydroxyl radicals (OH). New scientific investigations suggest that in the absence of UV light and combustion processes, the heterogeneous hydrolysis of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on indoor surfaces can be a major HONO source.

In the referenced paper the researchers, Gligorovski, S., Liu, J et al, study the contribution of NO2 to HONO production under different conditions. NO2 was measured by ECO PHYSICS CLD 88p + PLC 860 photolytic (metal halide lamp) converter. According to authors, the advantage of the photolytic converter in this particular study is that in prevents interference from HONO and other NOy species which is not the case for NOx instruments using molybdenum converters.

In the referenced paper researchers, Bailey, J. D., Shaw, A., McNeill, E.,et al., aim to establish an optimal protocol and a standardized cell culture method for the study of nitric oxide (NO)-redox biology and immunometabolism in vitro. A crucial element of this protocol includes the equipment that measures Nitric Oxide and Nitric Oxide metabolites, e.g. Nitrite/Nitrates in MBDM. New Bacteria Filter 308-138

ECO PHYSICS, INC. would like to inform you that we have switched to a new bacteria filter for use in combination with the EXHALYZER® D and ANALYZER CLD 88sp.

This new filter has several advantages compared to the previous one in regards to dead space, resistance, and filtration efficiency. First, the dead space of the filter is now smaller, therefore the risk of rebreathing carbon dioxide is reduced. Second, the respiratory resistance is now smaller, which makes breathing easier. Finally, the new filter offers better filtration efficiency, which means that the patient is better protected against bacterial and viral contamination. And the best news: The price remains unchanged. Packaging remains the same - 50 pieces per case.

Researchers at Jinan University, Guangzhou, China, studied indoor air quality as a results of HONO photolysis by measuring HONO, NO and NO2 in the absence of human activity and during human activity and cooking times. Researchers propose a novel approach to measuring brake emissions using ECO PHYSICS CLD 66 NOx analyzer

Non-exhaust traffic related emissions include tire wear, road wear, dust from resuspension and most importantly brake wear. Although brake wear emissions have been well investigated, no standardized measurement method has yet been established.

In their PhD dissertation, zum Hagen, F., & Ferdinand, H. (2020), propose a novel method for measuring brake emissions both in lab (dynamometer) and under real life (on-road) normal driving conditions. Investigators used ECO PHYSICS CLD 66 NO/NO2/NOx for its sensitivity and the unmatched response time.

Effects of Diesel Particle Filter Retrofits and Accelerated Fleet Turnover on Drayage Truck Emissions at the Port of Oakland

Abstract

Emissions from thousands of in-use heavy-duty diesel trucks were sampled at a highway and an arterial street location in the San Francisco Bay Area, spanning a time period when use of diesel particle filters (DPFs) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) increased rapidly. At the highway site where a diverse mix of trucks is observed, SCR systems on 2010 and newer engines reduce emitted nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 87 ± 5% relative to pre-2004 engines. SCR also mitigates DPF-related increases in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions. However, a majority of trucks at both locations had in-use NOx emission rates that exceeded applicable emission standards. SCR systems increase emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and ammonia (NH3), from near-zero levels to 0.93 ± 0.13 and 0.18 ± 0.07 g kg-1, respectively. Emissions of all nitrogenous species and especially NH3 are skewed; 10% of trucks contribute 95% of the on-road fleet’s total NH3 emissions. Similar emission changes are observed at the arterial street site where exclusively drayage trucks operate. The environmental effects of decreased black carbon, NOx, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and increased N2O and NH3 emissions due to rapid adoption of DPF and SCR systems by the California truck fleet are: (1) a net decrease in the social cost of statewide exposure to diesel truck emissions (–3.3 billion 2018 US dollars per year), and (2) a net decrease in the global warming potential-weighted emission factor (–27 g CO2-eq km-1).

Continental Automotive’s Smart NOx Sensors

Continental Automotive uses ECO PHYSICS NOx Analyzers f or testing and quality assurance in production of Smart NOx Sensors for diesel engines. Recently awarded the Automotive News PACE Award, the Smart NOx Sensor is the first on-board sensor capable of direct measurement of NOx in ppm levels. The sensor, developed in cooperation with NGK Insulators, allows vehicle and engine manufacturers like Daimler and Cummins to meet EPA 2010 and Euro V emissions require-ments. In addition to providing better fuel economy, the Smart NOx Sensor also facilitates control of after treatment systems. After treatment systems in gasoline engines includes controlling of the regeneration cycle of the NOx Storage Catalyst, while Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) reduces NOx by injection of ammonia into the exhaust gas.

Catalyst Test Services, LLC and the CLD 60 Series

Catalyst Test Service, LLC. Of Ojai, CA uses ECO PHYSICS NOx Analyzers for synthetic gas bench characterization for washcoat development, analysis of in-use parts, and deactivation/poisoning studies. They also employ the analyzers to test engine exhaust in the field.

Catalyst Test Service is currently operating one CLD 62 and one CLD 64 NOx Analyzer. The CLD 62 will measure NOx concentrations as high as 5000 ppm with a sensitivity of 0.5 ppm. The CLD 64 has a maximum range of 100 ppm, with a sensitivity down to 2 ppb.

Catalyst Test Service supplements their NOx analyzers with a full suite of analyzers to quantify other components of interest. Have You Tested Your NO2 Converter Lately?

Take 30 minutes to ensure that you are accurately measuring total NOx (NO + NO2)

Chemiluminescence NOx Analyzers rely on NO2 converters to provide a reading of total NOx, or NO + NO2. These converters last an average of 10,000 hours or about one year of continuous operation. As the converter loses its ability to convert NO2, the instrument will measure a lower percentage of the NO2 in your sample stream and provide a less accurate NOx value. The converter efficiency can be tested with a cylinder of NO2, however NO2 standards are known to have a short shelf life. The alternative method approved by the EPA is the Bag Test Method in section 16.2 of method 7E . This method, used by ECO PHYSICS, only requires a Tedlar bag, the same stable NO standard used for instrument calibration, and a source of ambient air (or other gas containing at least 19.5% oxygen).

The test involves filling half the Tedlar bag with NO, half with the compressed air and then immediately placing the bag on the analyzer sample inlet for a test lasting 30 minutes. You record the initial NOx value and then measure the NOx after 30 minutes. During this time NO is reacting with Oxygen (O2) in the bag to form NO2—however the total NOx concentration in the bag stays the same. If the final NOx measurement has decreased by more than 2% the converter has failed to meet specification. Converter efficiency testing is the best way to ensure your analyzer is providing an accurate NOx value in your measurements. Why take the chance when 30 minutes can ensure confidence? The new CLD 62 Ox and 63 Ox are the first ECO PHYSICS 60 Series NOx analyzer to include an O2 sensor and our supreme line interface.

The CLD 62 Ox and CLD 63 Ox provide a cost effective chemiluminescence NOx measurement with a paramagnetic oxygen sensor included. Building upon the compact and economical 60 series, ECO PHYSICS has also added a built-in computer including new operation software that surpasses all analyzers in its class in customizable options, remote access, and data collection options. Introducing the CLD 63 as a Direct Replacement for the CLD 70E NOx Analyzer

Due to more stringent regulations, processes must be cleaner and require more sensitive instruments. Gas turbines in cogeneration power plants generally have NOx levels below 20 ppm. The new CLD 63 fills the gap for emissions measurements between our standard emissions instrument and the more sensitive ambient monitoring equipment. The new CLD 63 nitrogen oxide analyzer exactly and reliably measures your NOx emissions. With its four, user-defined measuring ranges up to 500 ppm, it covers the relevant scale for monitoring clean CEMS facilities. The minimum detectable concentration is 0.05 ppm making this instrument ideal for processes with low level NOx emissions. This analyzer is a direct replacement for the discontinued CLD 70 Series NOx Analyzer. Some of the benefits of replacing the CLD 70 with the CLD 63 are as follows:

The CLD 63 uses many of the same parts as the CLD 70 including the display, keyboard, reaction chamber, detector, converter, ozone generator and vacuum pump.
The CLD 63 no longer needs the external ozone scrubber.
The operation and routine maintenance are identical, reducing training costs.
The CLD 63 offers a new, easier analog data output capability (terminal strip connectors) but can also be supplied with wired or wireless LAN as well as the standard 9 pin RS232 port.
